Where we’ve come from

Fusion was born in the United Kingdom in the late nineties out of a place of prayer and a holy hunger for young adults to encounter Jesus in their formative years. It initially grew through students planting missional small groups on campus and around university towns and cities. As university students came to faith and needed to be formed as disciples, Fusion’s focus sharpened, committing to working with and through local churches to reach the campus and create sustainable pathways for college students to find both hope in Jesus and home in the local church, long term.

Miriam Swanson, our National Director, moved to the USA in 2019, married an American and started Fusion USA in 2020, establishing it as a non-profit organization in 2021. She had previously worked for Fusion across the UK and Europe for over a decade and with invitation and provision, saw the need and answered the call to begin the work here in the States.

Why we’re here

Fusion helps students find hope in Jesus and home in the local church.

Fusion are committed to championing a worldwide movement of student mission. We believe in the power and potency of college students as a force for revival and transformation in the world and recognise that university is a key formational, decision-making time for them. We are convinced that it is the local church who are best placed to nurture, disciple and support college students into mission across campuses, cities and beyond. Fusion, therefore, seeks to equip students for a life of mission and discipleship by guiding them into local churches that are trained and resourced to effectively care for and release students into the calling God has placed on their lives.

Equipping Churches today

Fusion is an ecumenical movement, partnering across denominations and expressions of the church, working with hundreds of local church communities to love, reach and disciple the thousands of college students in our localities. Today, Fusion has been sown and grown in Scotland, Spain and the USA as well as continuing to serve and grow in England and Wales. Over twenty five years in and we feel like we are just getting started with the work of fusing the local church with the largely unreached mission field of the campus.

How we help

We are values-driven not program-driven in our desire to serve churches. The main way we help you reach college students is through friendship and partnership. As we get to know you, your church and your context, we aim to resource you with the tools, insights and wisdom you need to take your next steps in reaching this generation as they leave high school and enter college.

Our resources exist to strengthen your work with college students. They are practical, missional tools and are made to be put into the hands of college students, student leaders, young adult pastors and church leaders.

One of the major needs in College Student Ministry in the USA, is for those of us called to this work, to not feel so alone. We aim to connect you into community with others in the same vocation, encourage you in your calling to reach the campus, and help you find the right fuel to keep going for the long haul.

Commonly asked questions:

How is Fusion USA different from the campus ministries that exist already?

We only work through the local church so you won’t see us making Fusion groups or hosting events on campus. We celebrate unity, believing any and every local church can have a part to play in reaching the campus, even the same one!

P
Do you help churches reach a diverse student population?

We aim to help your church reach your local student population, including international students and students from heritages that may not be currently represented in your community. This will take time and work!

We don’t have any college students, can we still work with you?

If your heart is to reach college students, even if you are starting from scratch with nothing, we would love to help you begin. No church or team is too small!
